For students who want to treat each syllable in multisyllable words as individual words, I use different colors or types of counters for syllables, to those which I use for words. First, let me define phonics: Phonics is the method of teaching beginning readers to connect the sounds of spoken language with letters or a group of letters and yes, part of phonics instruction involves the teaching of children to blend the sounds of letters together to form words technically referred to as decoding skills.
Syllable Awareness: A syllable is a word, or a part of a word with one vowel sound.
Phonics and phonemic awareness strategies
How is phonics different from phonemic awareness? Ask your school's reading specialist for help finding a research-based supplemental or intervention program for students in need. Make up silly sentences with words that begin with the same sound, such as "Nobody was nice to Nancy's neighbor". Phonological awareness skills are prerequisite skills for phonics! Decoding words aids in the development of word recognition, which in turn increases reading fluency. Phonemic, or phoneme awareness is crucial to reading, and the other skills of phonological awareness, mentioned above, are its foundation. Phonics instruction should be explicit rather than implicit. It is really important that children understand that phonemes are the smallest parts of oral words, whereas letters are the smallest parts of written words.
You can have phonological awareness without phonics but you cannot have phonics without phonological awareness.
Decoding is the process of looking at a printed word and being able to say it correctly. Progress in reading does not necessarily result in progress in spelling.
I promise. Once kids are able to decode words well they begin to work on remembering and understanding the words they are reading.
